For Father's Day, have fun painting a pair of cotton socks in his size, with a design he likes or a personal message.
Younger children can draw with textile markers. For the more experienced, you can create some very pretty socks using textile paint. You can even create a whole collection of personalised socks to match your dad's wardrobe!

Stage 1
- Choose your design and paint colours. Here, on a light grey sock, I'm going to draw cobalt blue stripes and a small oriental red heart.

Step 2
- Slide the bottle into the first sock. This allows the mesh to be stretched so that it can be painted properly. It's important that the bottle is made of glass so that if the paint does break through, it doesn't stick to it and you can clean it easily afterwards.

Step 3
- Start by painting a small red heart on the top of the sock, in the middle of the outside of the leg. I've painted it freehand, but if you like, you can draw it with a felt-tip pen first and then paint along the lines.

Step 4
- Paint horizontal blue stripes across a good height of the sock. I stopped at the bottom of the ankle, because it's getting more complicated to manage the scratches on the way from the ankle to the instep.

Step 5
- Allow the paint to dry on the bottle, then remove the sock and iron it on the reverse for 5 minutes to set the paint. To speed up drying, you can use a hairdryer.

Step 6
- Do the same with the second sock, remembering to make the heart on the outside of the leg, opposite the first.

Step 5
- Cut a 7 x 12 cm rectangle of paper. Fold it in half. Write a "Happy Birthday Dad" message on the label.

Step 5
- Using the needle, punch 2 centred holes in the 2 layers of paper.

Step 5
- Sew on the top of the pair of socks with a small thread that is not too tight and easy to cut.

Step 5
- Here are lots of other ideas for patterns to paint. For younger children, use textile markers that are easier to handle. You can also buy beautiful ready-made socks and just replace the label with your own personalised label by following steps 7 to 9.
