Create a special day with handmade decorations, fun entertainment and a unique cake!

Organising an unforgettable birthday means offering your child a special day filled with laughter, treats and creative activities. Whether you're looking for anoriginal birthday idea, a handmade birthday decoration, or some fun entertainment, this article offers 20 original DIY birthday ideas to create a magical, personalised atmosphere. Here's how to turn every moment, from invitationsto cake to table decoration, into a memorable keepsake!

Invitations: the first step in organising a personalised birthday party

In your back-planning before the big day, invitations are one of the first things you need to do toorganise a successful birthday. Your child should be able to hand them out to guests several days or even weeks before the date, so that parents have time to get organised. Rather than choosing ready-made cards from the shops, take the opportunity to organise an original birthday idea: a birthday card workshop at home!

If you're not feeling creative and/or your child is still too young to make his or her own cards, you can find basic kits on the market that can be used to make pretty invitation cards, complete with beautiful handwriting. If your child is not yet old enough to write, have him or her stick on a few stickers to personalise each invitation.

If your child likes to draw, here's an original and creative idea for making their own invitation cards. Make drawings using pencil sharpener peelings and small pompoms stuck on the card... Here the pencil sharpener peelings are from dancers' tutus, and the pompoms from ballroom bubbles! Each guest will receive an original work of art as an invitation to the birthday party.

Another idea that always looks great: on a thick sheet of white Canson paper, get your child to draw a large birthday cake using crayons or greasepaint. Then, using watercolour or diluted gouache, paint the background together with one or more colours in a gradient. The paint does not set on the wax, leaving the original design visible on a beautiful coloured background. It's also a great way to create a festive atmosphere well before the big day!

Original birthday idea: creative cakes to make at home

Cake design is becoming more and more popular at birthday parties, and children are asking for cakes that are each more original than the last! So, if your child wants a cake worthy of "Le meilleur pâtissier" and you know that your culinary skills aren't quite up to the challenge... here are a few tips!

Cactus-shaped cake

The cactus cake: an original idea that piques curiosity

  • Place two round sponge cakes on top of each other with a layer of cream or jam in between.
  • Cover with buttercream.
  • Cut out various cactus shapes from green marzipan or sugarpaste.
  • Glue these cacti in a frieze around the cake.
  • Add small sugar flowers to the top of some cacti.
Cake with animals

Carnival of the animals

  • Turn a simple cake into an original menagerie by placing plastic animal figurines on top.
  • Top tip: clean the figurines thoroughly before placing them on the cake.
  • Add some festive hats and you're done!

Warning: if you add candles to the cake, make sure you keep them away from animals to avoid melted plastic!

Pink frilly cake

The frilly cake

  • Make two yoghurt cakes, one larger than the other so that they overlap.
  • Place a few drops of pink food colouring in the centre of a loaf of white sugarpaste. Mix to obtain a light pink colour. Divide the ball of sugar dough into 3 equal parts. Keep one part light pink. In the second ball, add a few drops of pink colouring to obtain a medium pink, and in the last ball a little more colouring to obtain a dark pink.
  • Roll out the 3 balls of sugar dough into thin sheets. From these sheets, cut strips about 3 cm wide and as long as possible.
  • Starting at the bottom of the cake, apply a strip of dark pink sugarpaste, gathering it like fabric around the cake. Work your way up the layers, using lighter and lighter stripes and overlapping them. Finish with a circle of light pink pastry covering the top of the cake.
Cupcakes

Cupcakes: a gourmet table decoration

Cupcakes are the perfect way for every child to have a little bit of a party. They also make for separate table decoration. Simply place the candles on the cupcake in the centre and the king or queen of the party will make their wish and blow out their candles, just like with a large cake.

This option works very well with doughnuts or cream puffs. Create a happy, festive atmosphere around the tea party.

Candy bar

A candy bar

Opt for a self-service buffet by piling up lots of dishes filled with sweets and other treats on a single table topped with the title "Candy bar". But beware of liver attacks!

Handmade birthday decorations: create a personalised atmosphere

Happy Birthday" striped curtain

Golden, brightly coloured or glittery, these fringed garlands are easy to find in party decoration shops or on specialist websites. Piñata

A Latin American tradition: the Piñata

You're probably familiar with these pretty papier-mâché shapes that are suspended in the air and that children have to hit blindfolded with a stick to make them burst and release treats! You'll find ready-made ones on the market, but there are also plenty of tutorials on how to make your own. The piñata is guaranteed to be a highlight of thespecial day.

Confetti on the birthday table

Confetti party!

Confetti is always a big hit with little ones and it's a fun activity to do with them beforehand. Using simple round punches or punches with channel shapes, cut out lots of confetti from coloured paper scraps. You don't have to do it all at once! 10 minutes each day, a week before the birthday, is perfect!

Place handfuls of confetti in small transparent bags sealed with making tape. Hand out a bag to each guest with their invitation card or at the time of the birthday cake so that everyone can throw a handful over the king or queen of this special evening!

If you're good at it, you can even organise a game to see who can collect the most confetti, so you don't have to clean up after yourself! A handmade birthday decoration and an entertainment in its own right!

Gift pack

Gift wrapping: long live masking tape!

If you too have torn your hair out trying to wrap a round balloon in traditional gift wrap, only to end up with the disastrous result of a big crumpled ball of paper surrounded by a kilometre of Bolduc... Here's a simple solution for artistically wrapping any gift, whatever its shape!

Take a pretty natural or coloured kraft bag. Using different small pieces of making tape, write "happy birthday" or the name of the child for whom the gift is intended, or draw a big heart...

Wrap your gift in coloured tissue paper and slip it into the decorated kraft bag. Close the bag with a small piece of Bolduc tied around the handles. As well as being beautiful and practical, this packaging is also reusable.

Birthday entertainment for a special day

Chamboule-tout

A must: chamboule-tout

Easy to create with the kids, dress up empty tins with pretty papers and number them. For the ball, enclose some rice in a balloon tied into a ball. Each child must aim at the stacked boxes. We count the points for the boxes that have fallen. The player with the most points wins a surprise bag. A must-have entertainment for organising a birthday party outdoors or indoors.
Jewellery-making workshop

Jewellery workshop

Use a compartmentalised tray for aperitif cakes, replacing the cakes with pearls.

The guests line up around the table. Each person has a rubber band and can make a friendship bracelet by stringing beads as they are drawn from the tray. At the end, everyone gives their bracelet to the guest seated on their right.

Macramé rainbow

Creating rainbows

With coloured rope and thread, you can create pretty macramé rainbows. Each child can then hang it in their room as a souvenir of this wonderful day.
Magic drawing pens

Magic drawing

Magic drawing is based on the principle of wax crayons combined with watercolour or diluted gouache, as described in the first paragraph of this article. This is where drawing becomes a magical exercise!

Each child will draw on a thick white sheet of paper using white greaseproof chalk... So you can't see very well, if at all, what you're drawing... It's by passing a watercolour or left-wing brush over the sheet that the grease chalk drawing will appear!

This technique can also be used to uncover coded messages during a treasure hunt...

All these original birthday ideas are great ways to get inspired and create an atmosphere that's just like your child. Feel free to twist and adapt them to your child's imagination.
